The Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) is a governance, health, and human rights NGO whose vision is A Society free from Torture and Related Violations. IMLU’s work is fostered by a holistic approach that includes litigation, medical and psycho-social rehabilitation, socio-economic empowerment, oversight of government compliance with human rights obligations, and advocacy of political, legal, and institutional reforms that promote accountability, healing, and justice. Over the last three decades, the organization has supported more than 6,000 victims of torture, and cruel, degrading, and inhumane treatments. We have a national presence of over 300 professionals; doctors, trauma counsellors, lawyers, human rights monitors, and journalists.

IMLU wishes to provide an opportunity for an internship for a suitably qualified person to fill the position of Redress Intern.

Primary Responsibilities 
The incumbent will be responsible for providing support to the Redress Program by:
1. Client work.
a) Conducting intake of cases as directed by the Assistant Program Officer/Program officer Redress this includes recording witness
statements from clients and filling in all relevant IMLU forms at the intake stage as well as latter stages in accordance with IMLU’s Case Management Protocol;
b) Provision of legal advice to new IMLU clients and making referrals to different institutions for better intervention;
c) Continuous checking of IMLU client files on their completeness and giving legal advice on the following;
i. The next course of legal action to be undertaken on the file;
ii. Writing Referral letters and Petitions to relevant institutions; and
iii. Calling the clients and the Lawyers before court dates to ensure both show up in court.
d) Assist in Conducting fact-finding visits to police stations, prisons and courts as part of basic legal assistance to clients;
e) Making follow-ups with the state and non-state institutions.
2. Follow up with Network Lawyers.
 Communication and follow-up with network lawyers who have been assigned cases and recorded the communication in the individual client file, the litigation matrix and the relevant entry made in the bring-up dairy.
3. Network and Partnerships.
a. Assist in the preparation and actualization of training for different stakeholders that IMLU works with including NCAJ, KMJA, LSK and KSL
b. Representation of IMLU in select training/conferences and networks in which IMLU is participating;
4. Legal Research.
a. Development of write-ups for use in policy and legislative reform processes;
b. Assist in Analyzing proposed legislation and Policies and advancing IMLU’s position; and
c. Assist in the Development of legal opinion on different issues
5. Programming.
a. Preparing relevant reports and recording of minutes in respect of select workshops and meetings including the case management meeting;
b. Provide the Assistant Program Officer with client file reports for review and decision making 7 days after the competition of documentation;
6. Any other related duty that may be allocated by the Redress Assistant and Program Office

Minimum Qualification

  • A diploma or degree in Law from a recognized institution;
  • Relevant professional experience with a human rights organization or law firm is an added advantage;
  • Ability to conduct effective legal file processing;
  • Excellent written and verbal skills in English and Kiswahili.

  • Must be willing to take the initiative and work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to treat victim information with confidentiality;
  • Ability to work in a diverse team and offer leadership;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as IT competency;
  • Readiness to travel outside Nairobi for field outreach.
